Career in the Indian Air Force
The Indian Air Force is one of the world's most advanced air forces, with a frontline fleet of Rafale, Su-30 MKI, Tejas LCA and Mirage 2000 fighters, and a strategic transport fleet including C-17, C-130J and IL-78. As an IAF officer, you serve in one of three branches — Flying (the pilot stream), Ground Duty Technical (engineering), or Ground Duty Non-Technical (admin, logistics, accounts, education, met, weapon systems). Below is every officer-entry route, with eligibility, selection process and links to coaching.
The Indian Air Force is the world's fourth-largest air force, with around 1,500 aircraft including Su-30 MKI, Rafale, Tejas, Mirage 2000 and a strategic fleet of transport and helicopter aircraft. As an officer, you can serve in the Flying Branch (Pilot), Ground Duty Technical (Engineering), or Ground Duty Non-Technical (Admin, Logistics, Accounts, Education, Met, Weapon Systems).
Flying Branch — Pilot
The most coveted IAF entry. Three routes — NDA, CDSE (AFA), and AFCAT/NCC. All lead to flying training at AFA Hyderabad and combat aircraft conversion afterwards.
NDA — Air Force Wing
The youngest path into the IAF Flying Branch. Cadets undergo joint tri-service training at NDA before transferring to AFA Hyderabad for flying conversion.
CDSE — Air Force Academy (Flying)
AFCAT & NCC Special — Flying Branch
AFCAT is conducted twice a year (February & August) directly by the IAF. Successful candidates undergo AFSB and CPSS, then commission as Flying Officers under SSC (10 years initial, extendable to 14).
Ground Duty (Technical) Branches
For engineering graduates. Officers serve as Aeronautical Engineers (Mechanical) or (Electronics), maintaining and modernising the IAF's aircraft fleet, weapon systems and ground equipment.
AE(L) — Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics)
AE(M) — Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical)
Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Branches
For graduates with diverse backgrounds. Six branches — Admin, Logistics, Accounts, Education, Meteorology, Weapon Systems.
| Branch | What officers do | Education needed |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Personnel, training, station administration | Graduate (any stream) |
| Logistics | Fleet supply, fuel, ammunition, transport | Graduate (any stream) |
| Accounts | Financial planning, audit, internal controls | B.Com/M.Com/CA/CMA/MBA Finance |
| Education | Officer training, academic instruction at IAF schools | M.Sc/M.A in specified subjects |
| Meteorology | Weather forecasting for flight operations | M.Sc Math/Physics or related |
| Weapon Systems | Operating air-defence/strike weapon systems | Graduate (PCM at 12th) |
Women in the Indian Air Force
The IAF was the first Indian service to allow women in fighter cockpits (2016). Today, women officers fly Su-30 MKI, Rafale, Tejas, Mirage 2000, MiG-21 and transport aircraft. All IAF branches — Flying, Ground Tech, Ground Non-Tech — are open to women through SSC. Permanent Commission has been extended to women in eligible branches following the 2020 Supreme Court ruling.
Training at AFA Hyderabad
All IAF officer cadets train at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Hyderabad — one of the world's most rigorous military flying academies. Training duration:
- Flying Branch: ~74 weeks (academics + basic flying on Pilatus PC-7 + Stage II on Kiran/Hawk + type conversion)
- Ground Duty Technical: ~52 weeks
- Ground Duty Non-Technical: ~52 weeks
On graduation, all are commissioned as Flying Officers on Pay Level 10 (₹85,000+ in-hand) with Military Service Pay (₹15,500) and Flying Pay (₹25,000) for Flying Branch.
