Group tasks, obstacles, command tasks, planning exercises — all 9 GTO tasks explained and practised under a retired Senior GTO who assessed candidates at actual SSBs for years.

The GTO is one of three assessors at every SSB. While the Psychologist tests your inner world and the IO interviews you, the GTO watches you in action — in groups, under pressure, solving real physical problems.
All GTO tasks are leaderless — no one is officially made the leader. The GTO watches who naturally takes charge, who helps the group move forward, who loses composure under time pressure, and who adjusts when their ideas don't work.
The GTO assesses 14 OLQs across 9 tasks. The most heavily weighted in GTO are: Effective Intelligence, Social Adjustment, Cooperation, Sense of Responsibility, Initiative, and Physical Stamina. Every task is designed to reveal these qualities under pressure.
GTO tasks run across three days of the 5-day SSB process. Day 1 is Stage 1 screening. Days 2–4 are Stage 2 — GTO tasks, Psychology tests, and Personal Interview all happen in parallel. The full GTO schedule spans multiple sessions across these three days.
Outdoor tasks — PGT, HGT, CT, FGT, IO, and Snake Race — take place in the GTO ground. The ground has fixed obstacles (Burma Bridge, Double Bar, Jumping Stand, etc.), planks, ropes, poles, and a defined structure. Learning the ground before SSB is a significant advantage.
Each task tests different OLQs. Click any task to read the full guide, rules, common mistakes, and what the GTO is watching for.
Two rounds — first on a topic given by the GTO, second on a topic chosen by the group. Tests communication, logical thinking, and how you handle disagreement without becoming aggressive.
The group studies a model (a sand model or map) of a hypothetical situation with multiple emergencies, then each candidate gives their individual plan. Tests Effective Intelligence and initiative under time pressure.
Two groups race to complete an obstacle course while carrying a "snake" (a rope all members must hold). The first group to finish wins. Tests teamwork, physical coordination, and how you handle competition as a unit.
The first major outdoor obstacle task. The whole group crosses a series of obstacles using helping materials (planks, rope, plank-balli) under strict rules. Difficulty increases progressively with each obstacle.
The group is split into two halves and each half goes to a separate obstacle. Smaller group, same time pressure. Individuals who blended in during PGT are now more visible. Tests leadership in a compressed setting.
Each candidate picks one of four topics (two known, two unknown) and speaks for 3 minutes in front of the group. Not a speech — a structured talk. Tests communication skills, general awareness, and composure under audience pressure.
Each candidate completes a set of 10 individual obstacles alone within a time limit. Each obstacle has a different point value. Tests physical fitness, courage, and how you prioritise under a ticking clock.
Each candidate is made the commander for one obstacle. They choose 2–3 subordinates from the group and must lead them across. The clearest test of leadership in the GTO series — you are officially in command.
The full group reunites for one final outdoor obstacle — the last chance for the GTO to observe the group dynamics. Candidates who improved across the series can consolidate a strong impression here.
14 OLQs are assessed across the entire SSB. In the GTO tasks, these eight are the most visible and most weighted.
Practical problem-solving in real situations — spotting the correct solution quickly, especially under time pressure in GPE and PGT.
Logical thinking — connecting cause and effect, recognising what will and won't work on an obstacle, and explaining your decisions clearly in GD and GPE.
Coordinating resources and people — who does what, in what order, with what material. Most visible in CT and HGT when you are leading or influencing the group.
Communicating clearly — giving instructions others can follow, making your plan understood quickly. Critical in GD, GPE, and Lecturette.
Adjusting to the group — not insisting on your plan when a better one exists, supporting others' ideas when they're right, and reading group dynamics quickly.
Working as a team member — sharing materials, physically helping teammates across obstacles, pulling others forward instead of racing ahead alone.
Taking ownership — not abandoning the group's goal when things get difficult. Visible when time is running out on an obstacle and candidates either push harder or withdraw.
Physical and mental endurance — attempting all Individual Obstacles including the taller, riskier ones, and maintaining energy through the GTO series across three full days.
Col DN Sharma was the Senior Group Testing Officer at 19 SSB Allahabad and 17 SSB Bangalore. He assessed thousands of candidates at actual SSBs. He did not clear SSB once and start a YouTube channel — he ran the GTO ground for years. That is who trains you here.
GTO training is physical. You need a real ground, real obstacles, and someone who knows exactly what the board is looking for — because they were on the board.
The Cavalier has a purpose-built outdoor GTO training ground in Rajouri Garden, Delhi. You practice on actual obstacles — planks, ropes, poles, Burma Bridge — not on videos or diagrams.
Col DN Sharma served as Senior GTO at two of India's largest SSBs. He knows exactly which behaviours score and which disqualify — because he was the one marking them.
Indoor tasks (GD, GPE, Lecturette) and outdoor tasks (PGT, HGT, CT, FGT, IO, Snake Race) are all covered. No skipping the tasks candidates find uncomfortable.
After each session, Col Sharma gives individual feedback to every candidate — not generic tips, but specific observations on where your OLQs are strong and where you are being marked down.
The 3rd week of The Cavalier's SSB programme is a full 5-day mock SSB. The GTO round is conducted on the ground with Col Sharma observing exactly as a board GTO would.
Most candidates who come to The Cavalier are on their second or third attempt. Col Sharma's debrief identifies exactly which GTO-assessed OLQs cost candidates the recommendation in their previous attempt.
Cavalier candidates recommended at SSBs across all boards and all services.
GTO training is part of The Cavalier's full SSB Intensive programme. Limited seats.
