Career in the Indian Defence Forces
Choosing a career in the Indian Armed Forces is one of the most consequential decisions a young Indian can make. There are over 25 distinct entry routes for officers across the three services — and the right path depends on your age, education, gender and which service you're drawn to. This guide is a complete map. Below, you'll find pathways grouped by service (Army, Navy, Air Force), by your education stage (after 12th, after graduation), and by women's eligibility. Every pathway links to a detailed page or to The Cavalier's coaching programme for that exam.

Why Choose Defence as a Career?
Beyond the uniform and the prestige, here's what an officer's career actually offers — at a glance.
| What you get | What it actually means |
|---|---|
| Pay Level 10 + MSP | Starting in-hand ~₹85,000–95,000/month plus Military Service Pay of ₹15,500. With allowances, Lieutenants in field areas earn well above ₹1 lakh/month from Day 1. |
| Free housing & full medical | Officer-grade quarters at every posting, lifelong free medical for self & family, ECHS post-retirement. |
| Early pension | Pension after 20 years of service — many officers retire as Colonels in their early 50s with full pension and second-career options. |
| Adventure & travel | Postings across India, foreign deployments, mountaineering, sailing, flying — the variety no civilian job offers. |
| Honour & social standing | The King's Commission still carries weight in India that no MBA or government job approximates. |
