Every officer-entry route into the Indian Navy — UPSC, INET, 10+2 Direct Entry.
The Indian Navy is one of the world's most modern and capable maritime forces, with two aircraft carriers, a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, and operations spanning the Indian Ocean and beyond. It recruits officers through three distinct entry universes — UPSC examinations (NDA & CDSE), 10+2 Direct Entry, and the Navy's own Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET). Below is a complete map of every officer-entry route, with eligibility, training and pathways for women.
The Indian Navy is the maritime arm of the Indian Armed Forces — guarding India's 7,500-km coastline and projecting power across the Indian Ocean. As an officer, you can serve on warships, submarines, aircraft, in shore establishments, or as part of the elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS).
Three entry universes: the Navy recruits officers via (A) UPSC entries, (B) 10+2 Direct Entry (B.Tech), and (C) Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET) for Short Service Commission. Branches: Executive · Engineering · Electrical · Education · Naval Architecture · Logistics.

Women in the Navy
Women can apply for Navy officer entries through NDA Naval Wing (since 2021), CDSE INA, and INET across most branches — Education, Logistics, Naval Architecture, Air Traffic Control, Pilot, Observer and Law. The Navy was the first service to grant Permanent Commission to women officers in eligible branches.
All Navy officer cadets eventually train at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala, Kerala — one of the most modern military training campuses in Asia. Post-commissioning, officers undergo branch-specific training (warship duties, submarines at INS Satavahana, naval aviation at INS Hansa/Garuda, MARCOS at INS Abhimanyu). Career progression: Sub-Lieutenant → Lieutenant → Lieutenant Commander → Commander → Captain → Commodore → Rear Admiral → Vice Admiral → Admiral.
