Career in the Indian Army
The Indian Army is the world's second-largest standing army and the country's oldest continuously-serving institution. It offers more officer-entry routes than any other service — over a dozen distinct pathways calibrated for different ages, education backgrounds and career stages. Whether you're finishing Class 12, completing a B.Tech, in a civilian job, or already serving as a soldier, there is a route for you. Below, every Army entry is grouped by stage and explained with eligibility, age, training and links to The Cavalier's coaching for each.
The Indian Army is the world's second-largest standing army and offers the widest range of officer-entry routes among India's three services. Whether you're a Class 12 student, a graduate, an engineering student, a working professional or a serving soldier, there is a route designed for you.
After 12th — Direct Entry
Two routes open immediately after Class 12. Both put you in officer training before your 20th birthday.
National Defence Academy (NDA) — Army Wing
Selection is via UPSC written exam (Maths + General Ability) followed by SSB Interview and Medical Board. NDA is widely considered the gold-standard entry route — the youngest, most prestigious path to a King's Commission.
10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES)
TES is the engineering-officer route into the Army. There's no written exam — shortlisting is purely on JEE Mains score, then SSB and Medical Board. Successful cadets earn a B.E./B.Tech degree during training and commission as Lieutenants in technical arms (Engineers, Signals, EME).
Graduate Entries — UPSC Route
For graduates aged 19+. Both routes go through UPSC's Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE) — written test followed by SSB.
Indian Military Academy (IMA) — Direct
IMA is the Permanent Commission graduate route into the Indian Army. Three written papers (English, GK, Maths — 100 marks each) plus SSB. Successful candidates train at IMA Dehradun for 18 months and commission as Lieutenants.
Officers Training Academy (OTA) — Non-Technical Men
OTA is the SSC graduate route — initial 10 years extendable to 14. Two written papers only (English + GK; no Maths). Same standing, pay and allowances as PC officers; difference is in tenure.
Graduate Technical Entries
For engineering graduates. No written exam in most cases — shortlisting is based on engineering academic record.
Technical Graduate Course (TGC)
TGC commissions engineering graduates directly into the Army's technical arms (Corps of Engineers, Signals, EME). Selection: shortlisting on engineering aggregate, then SSB. Apply at joinindianarmy.nic.in.
SSC (Tech) Men — Short Service Commission Technical
Service & Special Entries
For serving soldiers, JCOs, professionals and specialised cadres.
Army Cadet College (ACC)
Allows serving Army soldiers (JCOs and ORs) to commission as officers. Selection: written exam, SSB Interview and medical. Successful candidates undergo 3 years of training at the Army Cadet College Wing of IMA Dehradun before commissioning.
SSC (NCC Special Entry)
Territorial Army (TA)
TA enables employed civilians (Central/State Govt, PSU, private firms, self-employed) to commission as officers while continuing their civilian career. Two written papers (Reasoning + Maths · GK + English) followed by PIB and SSB. Permanent staff officers train at IMA Dehradun for 2 months within the first 2 years.
Other Specialised Entries
- SSC (JAG): Law graduates with 55%+ aggregate & CLAT PG score. 10 vacancies/cycle. Notified Jul/Aug & Jan/Feb.
